He approached this hope methodically and started noting down his observations in a notebook he had found in his pocket. Just as something might emerge from his observations, the waters might also relinquish a few feet more. He had looked up tide times in an old newspaper and observed their marks on the stones’ surface. He knew that his observations were possibly at odds with his hope, and there was something in this entanglement that he felt unwilling to unbind. It gave his endeavour an almost mystical quality.
